If you are a movie buff, or just generally like the film and acting industry, you must explore the Internet Movie Database (IMDb com) website.

With 4.1 million titles and 7.7 million industry personalities in its database, it’s no wonder that IMDb com has 70 million registered users!

The best is you don’t have to register as a member to view the IMDb com site, but you must do so if you would like to comment or make contributions to its vast database.

Another nifty feature is that users can rate movies using a weighted scale from 1 to 10. These ratings then appear alongside each title.

What is IMDb.com?

Known as the Internet Movie Database, it generated revenue from advertising sales, licensing fees and partnerships.

By 1998 the company had so much interest and hype that it was bought out as a subsidiary of Amazon Inc for $55 million.

The deal worked well for both parties.

Jeff Bezos owner, founder, and CEO of Amazon.com was able to use IMDb as a revenue earning platform for sales of videotapes and DVDs, while IMDb’s Col Needham could begin paying salaries for work performed by shareholders.

Launched more than 26 years ago in October 1990, IMDb was the brainchild of Col Needham, a British computer programmer.

IMDb began its life as “Those Eyes” when Needham started posting articles about actresses with beautiful eyes.

Bette Davis (above) featured on the “Those Eyes” site.

This snowballed as film fans began adding information.

Other lists added to the database included actors, directors and actresses, and subsequently lists of deceased movie stars.

The legendary Greta Garbo.

Today, IMDb has English sites and translated (completely or in part) in Danish, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish and Romanian).
