Among the elite class of apps that have teenagers and young adults glued to their smartphones is photo and video sharing platform Instagram. A world of sharing opens up with your Instagram login on smartphone, PC or laptop.

Instagram is more than a phone application; it is a social network that keeps people talking. Of late the platform has spawned a clutch of celebrities who have amassed thousands of followers simply because of the stuff they post.

The geniuses behind Instagram are Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. They came up with their revolutionary service in San Francisco in 2010, naming it after a mash-up of ‘instant’ and ‘telegram’.

That same year the first venture capitalist injected $500,000 and in 2012 Facebook bought the company for $1 billion. Instagram is a vibrant service today used by 300 million people worldwide.

Security and Privacy Issues

Back in 2012 Instagram nearly committed PR suicide by changing its Terms of Use to give itself the right to sell users’ photos to third parties without paying them or even telling them.

A good chunk of the service’s users left Instagram then before the company announced an about-turn in the policy. Another privacy loophole was reported early in 2015.

Users who uploaded pictures with their Instagram account settings on private such that only their friends could view them were shocked to find that they were available to the public.

Anyone with the picture’s URL could view it on their browser. Though Instagram addressed the loophole, Instagram pics shared on Facebook or Twitter are still available to the public.
